Your task today is to write your balanced argument based on the following question: Should lessons continue throughout the summer holidays to catch up on lost learning? This task will be set as an assignment on Teams.

Remember that this is a formal piece and needs to provide evidence for both sides of the argument. A good example of a balanced argument could follow this format:

Paragraph 1 - Introduction - Introduce the topic - Why have summer classes been mentioned?
Paragraph 2  - Argument for - Provide reasons and evidence as to why summer classes would be a good idea.
Paragraph 3 - Argument against - Provide reasons and evidence as to why summer classes would  not be a good idea.
Paragraph 4 - Conclusion - Give your own personal view based on the evidence referred to in paragraph 2 and 3. Remember to remain formal when giving your opinion!

Remember to include the following features:
 - modal verbs
 - rhetorical questions
 - facts and stats
- relative clauses
- parenthesis
- formal phrasing ( e.g Summer classes are not a good idea instead of Summer classes aren't a good idea.)

In last week's session, you planned your newspaper report on the discovery of Tutankhamun using the facts and information given to you in the powerpoint and fact file. This week, your task is to write your newspaper report. You can use the template provided or you can choose to design your own newspaper. This doesn't need to be an extended piece but you will need to include the key facts and details. Try to include the features of a newspaper such as past tense verbs, powerful vocabulary and eye-witness quotes.

Think about the global issue photo cards which you looked at in last week's session. What charity events are you aware of which try to prevent these problems from happening? Can you name any TV charity events which take place in order to raise awareness of an issue?

Your task is to think about who you would like to support or hold an event for. It may be that you want to raise money for a global, national or local charity. You need to plan and design and event or project that can raise money for your chosen charity.

Feel free to work with a partner or in a small group for this task but make sure only one charity is the focus. It could be a sponsored event or a sale-type event. Try to be as creative as possible, thinking of an original idea which will inspire others.

Keith Haring Examples

Keith Haring is a famous street artist with a distinctive style. Have a look at the slides to find out more.
He uses bold colours and a black outline to create images of people and animals. A few short lines create the impression of movement. His figures are simple; the position of the arms, legs, hands and feet add to the feeling of movement.

Your task is to cover a piece of paper with images in the style of Keith Haring. Choose a theme such as dance, gymnastics, football. Anything that involves movement, even running with a dog. Create images to reflect your theme. Leave space between each figure and add lines to develop the impression of movement. Then complete your masterpiece with bold colours including the background.

Felt tips will work best for this but coloured pencils, crayons or paint would also work. It would be interesting to see what this style would look like just using a pencil if you don't have colours.

Planning guide

Re-read the story of The Selfish Giant. This week, you will produce a piece of writing in the form of a recount - retelling this story in your own words. Today's task is to plan this recount. You may choose to use the planning grid to help you to organise your ideas.

Think about the recount as 4 key events: the children playing in the garden, the giant's return, Spring abandoning the garden and finally Spring returning. These events will each form a paragraph.

Paragraph 1 - Introduction, description of garden, description of children, feelings experienced by the children.
Paragraph 2 - description of giant, feelings experienced by the giant, change of feelings experienced by the children
Paragraph 3 - description of Winter, Hail and North Wind taking over the garden, feelings experienced by the Giant
Paragraph 4 - description of what the Giant sees looks out of his window, feelings experienced by the giant and the children.

The Selfish Giant tasks that you have completed so far will help you with this plan; feel free to lift sentences and ideas from these tasks and add them to your plan.

Spring personification poem example

Read the pages taken from The Selfish Giant. Look at the illustration on page 9. How are the children feeling at this point? How does their body language reflect their thoughts and feelings?
Look for examples of personification on page 8. Remember, personification is a figurative language technique where inanimate objects are given human (or animalistic) features e.g The wind howled.
Read page 10. What is the effect of referring to the snow and frost as people? Again, look for examples of personification. How many "characters" are referred to on page 10? How has Oscar Wilde used the characteristics of wind to describe how he speaks? Look at how Hail is described as moving too.
Your task is to now write a short passage, describing either a type of weather or a season using personification. If you find writing a passage too difficult you can write your ideas as separate sentences. If you choose to write a passage, focus on one type of weather or one season. If you choose to write separate sentences you can think of ideas for more than one.

Things to consider
How would each season/ weather move? Would Snow dance around?
How would each season/ weather speak? Would Winter howl and roar? Would Spring whisper?
How would each season/ weather look? Use the illustration on page 11 to help with this. Can you identify who each character represents based on the image?

There is a personification poem about Spring attached for you to look at for ideas, however you do not need to write your ideas a poem.

Read page 14 and make a prediction about what the Giant can see. Write this as a short description: e.g An elegant bird on top of the cherry tree. Can you spot the noun, adjective and preposition? Remember that prepositions help us to "place" things e.g under, over, above, through.  Could a verb also be added to expand the description further? e.g An elegant bird was singing on top of the cherry tree.
Read page 16. Can you spot any more prepositions in the text? Using the illustration on page 17, write some descriptive expanded noun phrases including prepositions.
Here are some ideas to help you:
-The white doves glided across the cloudless sky.
-Playful children peeked out from under the marvellous canopy.

Look at the teaching slides again to remind you of the main ideas.
Your task is to first choose a habitat such as a desert, a pond, a back garden.
Then design an animal that could live there. Use your creative and imaginative powers. The focus must be on how your animal is adapted to live successfully in your chosen habitat. Consider physical and behavioural adaptations.
Complete the chart on the worksheet to describe the adaptations and how they help the animal survive. The empty boxes at the end are for your own ideas. The given example will help.
Finally, draw your animal to show its features.

Goal totem pole
Complete the totem pole diagram, focussing on any goals identified in the previous lesson.

In the top box, you will write your goal and how you will know when you have achieved that goal. For example, if your goal was to improve your handwriting you will know you have achieved this as you may receive an award or some sort of recognition for your handwriting.

The three boxes below are the steps you will need to take in order to achieve that goal. Make sure these are realistic and achievable! Finally, in the wings of the totem pole you are to write the strengths and skills needed to achieve your goal, e.g perseverence, determination, courage.

You can then decorate your totem pole in any way that you wish. Try to give your totem pole a theme so that your colour choices reflect your actual goal.
